Notesy and Dropbox

IBM Selectric
Notesy on the iPad is turning into one of my favorite writing apps on the iOS devices. Simplenote is great, but the interface can be janky at times. Notesy has a very quick search feature very much like notational velocity on the desktop, and a very easy-to-use interface.

When you install Notesy, set up with your Dropbox account and point it at a directory, (I set mine to my Simplenote directory,) and it loads the text files to immediately start editing.

There are some minor formatting options. You can change the font, you can change the paper style, change the pen style, but overall it’s meant to have a clean simple and straightforward interface.

The integration with Dropbox is very quick and very seamless. I’ve tested this several times. I can have Notational Velocity (I use Brett Terpstra’s nvAlt)[1] open on my laptop, Notesy open on the iPad, and I can make changes to a note and they appear on laptop and vice versa very quickly.

I still have Simplenote on the iPad and will probably use it for somethings. It’s a good application and the convenience of the Web interface has been nice in the past. But with the iPad and the iPhone personal Wi-Fi option I don’t know that I will need it that much.

The Simplenote integration with Scrivener was nice in version 1. But in version 2 of Scrivener there are now more options for synchronizing files. I am trying an approach similar to what MacSparky talked about in a recent Mac Power Users podcast. I’m having Scrivener synchronized to Elements in a Dropbox folder, and then using the Elements application on the iPad just for Scrivener projects. One challenge I’m running into at the moment as I set up my new writing project is figuring out the best naming approach for chapters and scenes. I’ll figure something out eventually.

So bottom line for those looking for a good text editor with fast search similar to Notational Velocity check out Notesy.

  1. Yes, this is turning into a very nerdy post. But I like markdown and writing in text. Give it a whirl.
