I have these two black frames that I bought from some discount store somewhere, and want to do something with them. They come with a matte divided into three sections for 4x6 pictures, overall roughly 24” x 7”. A friend of mine recently suggested hanging the frames vertically between the big bookshelves in the living room. Great idea, but what pictures to put in them?
Then it hit me…book covers. What I ended up doing was creating a ‘collage’ in photoshop of book covers.
The actual process was pretty simple…time consuming, but simple. I randomly picked a big stack of books that I like, and that have interesting covers. Here are the basic steps:

- Pick Books with interesting covers
- Scan the book covers and save
- Create a new image in photoshop the size of the frame plus one inch
- Create a new layer for each book cover, rotate and place randomly for interest
- SAVE FREQUENTLY
- Using a copy, flatten the image
- Using the select tool set to a fixed height and width to create printable pages (select height x width, for example, 9” x 7”), select areas and copy/paste to new images. Keep selecting areas till the entire image has been covered.
- Print each selection
- Grab tape, scissors…assemble
- Disassemble frame/matte, and cover the front face of the matte with the assembled book cover poster. Fold back edges and tape. Pay attention to corners, make sure the front stays smooth.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. Once on the wall, the minor problems will ‘disappear’. I was so happy with how the collage turned out, I decided to use it for the header image of the new The Age of Will blog.
Enjoy!
